A Harris County judge denied bond Thursday for Enrique Aguilar, 20, charged with murder in the deaths of two 17-year-olds killed about six months apart. Aguilar was already in the county jail on the first charge when the second was filed in June, so this is not a case of a defendant released and charged again.
Why it matters
A headline about bond denied for a man charged in two killings reads like a bail failure. This one is not, and the difference matters if you want the bail debate argued on real cases.
What the record shows instead is elapsed time. Angel Garcia was killed on August 30, 2025. Nobody was charged in his death until June 17, 2026, and that charge came only after Aguilar was already in custody on a different case.
By the numbers
- Two counts of murder. Aguilar is charged. He has not been convicted, and he is presumed innocent.
- August 30, 2025. Angel Garcia, 17, killed at a gathering in east Harris County.
- February 14, 2026. Mariah Alatorre, 17, killed at a separate gathering.
- About two months. KPRC 2 reports Aguilar was arrested two months after the February shooting.
- June 17, 2026. The second murder charge was filed, for the August 2025 killing, while Aguilar was already held in the Harris County Jail on the other charge. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced it that day.
- Nine months and 18 days between Angel Garcia’s death and a charge in it.
- $500,000, the bond previously set in the Alatorre case, per FOX 26 Houston.
- No adult criminal history in Harris County before these two cases, according to records cited by KPRC 2. His juvenile record is not public.
- November. His next court setting. Both cases are pending.
What the coverage buried
KPRC 2’s story is accurate, and to its credit it includes the line that Aguilar had no prior adult criminal history. What it does not say is that he was in custody continuously between the two charges. That single fact is what tells a reader this was not a pretrial release failure, and it appeared in June reporting by FOX 26 and Houston Stringer that the September story does not reference.
A reader who stops at the headline draws the opposite conclusion, and on this beat that conclusion gets repeated.
The other side
The strongest case against reading this as a delay: the two cases were linked by investigation, and detectives filed the second charge about two months after the first arrest, once they had a suspect in hand to work from. A 2025 homicide at a large gathering where witnesses do not come forward is hard, and slow is not the same as neglected.
That is fair, and we concede it. The number that would settle it is the sheriff’s office homicide clearance rate for 2025 and 2026, and that number is not published in a form we could check for this piece. Without it, nine months is a fact and not yet a finding.
What to watch
- November. Aguilar’s next setting in Judge Hazel Jones’s court, per KPRC 2.
- Whether the Harris County Sheriff’s Office publishes a homicide clearance rate for 2025 and 2026.
- The sheriff’s office cold case database, which it says lists unsolved homicides from unincorporated Harris County, at coldcases.harriscountytx.gov.
- Whether the state moves for a trial setting before the end of the year in either case.
Bottom line
Aguilar is charged, not convicted, and bond is denied in a case where the defendant was never released to begin with. The number here that deserves attention is not the bond. It is the nine months and 18 days between a 17-year-old’s death and a charge in it.
