Harris County will run 589 Election Day vote centers on November 3, down 193 from the 782 it ran in 2022. Early voting opens Monday at 75 locations, and no county official has said what rule produced the shorter Election Day list.
Why it matters
Harris County uses countywide vote centers, so any registered voter can use any open site. Cutting close to a quarter of the Election Day locations changes how far some people drive and how long they stand in line.
The county has published where to vote. It has not published the criteria behind the list, or a name next to the decision.
By the numbers
- 589 Election Day vote centers for November 3, against 782 across 133 ZIP codes in 2022. That is 193 fewer, about 24.7 percent. The subtraction checks: 782 minus 589 is 193.
- 75 early voting locations, counted on the Harris County Clerk’s own early voting map, generated October 16. Community Impact reports the same number.
- Early voting runs October 19 through October 30, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., except Sunday October 25, noon to 7 p.m. Election Day is Tuesday November 3, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Of the six ZIP codes ABC13 printed, four lost sites and two gained. Acres Homes, 77091, went from 8 to 4. Gulfton, 77081, went from 6 to 3. Atascocita, 77346, went from 13 to 10. South Houston, 77587, went from 3 to 1.
- Spring, 77373, went from 9 to 13. Cypress, 77433, went from 13 to 16.
What the coverage buried
ABC13 reported a cut of close to a quarter of the county’s Election Day voting sites and quoted one person about it: Nancy Sims, a political science lecturer, who said turnout patterns and the growth of early voting explain the drop. Nobody from the Harris County Clerk’s Office, which runs elections, appears in the story. The analysis behind the 589 and 782 figures does not name its data source.
Neither that story nor the African American News and Issues write-up of it gives the early voting location count. That is the number a voter actually needs before Monday morning. It is 75, and it is published on the clerk’s own website.
The other side
The case for fewer Election Day sites is real and it is not a party argument. Most Harris County voters now vote before Election Day. A site that drew a few dozen voters in 2022 costs about what a busy one costs to staff and supply. Sims is describing how election offices everywhere plan.
Against that, 2022 is a strange year to measure an improvement from. Harris County’s elections administrator at the time, Clifford Tatum, told commissioners that polling places opened late, ran out of paper and could not communicate, and that he did not yet know how widespread it was. Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey said he had raised the same concerns that March and that summer and nothing had been done. Fewer places to vote was never the fix anyone proposed for that.
So the objection is not about turnout models. It is that a quarter of the Election Day sites went away and the office that did it has not said on what rule. That complaint reads the same from a voting access group and from a taxpayer who wants to know what the change saved.
What to watch
- Monday, October 19, when early voting opens at the 75 locations.
- Whether the clerk’s office publishes the criteria behind the 589 sites, and a comparison with 2022.
- The clerk’s vote center page, which election officials caution may still change as sites are confirmed.
- October 29, the next Commissioners Court meeting, and whether any commissioner asks for that list.
Bottom line
The count is checkable and the subtraction is right. What is missing is not the number, it is the reason, and three days before early voting opens the office that made the decision has not given one.
The practical answer for a voter is the 75 early voting sites open Monday through October 30. Any registered voter in the county can use any of them.
